Voted by the BBC Music Magazine as the greatest soprano of all time and receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Maria Callas is truly a legendary woman. Born Sophia Cecelia Kalos in 1923 in Manhattan to Greek parents. She received her musical education in Athens. After graduating from the Athens Conservatorium she made her professional debut in the role of Beatrice in Franz von Suppé's Boccaccio in February 1942.
She pursued her career in Italy, where she received a role in La Gioconda at the Arena de Verona, after she impressed Tullio Serafin, a distinguished Italian conductor. One of her immortal performances was in the role of Bizet's Carmen where she sings alongside the Paris National Opera Orchestra. She debuts also in Chicago and London, where she takes the critics by storm. She also received praise from all those who worked with her, Maestro Victor de Sabata states, "If the public could understand, as we do, how deeply and utterly musical Callas is, they would be stunned".
Maestro Antonia Votto invited us to view Maria Callas as "she was not just a singer, but a complete artist. There is no one like her today. She was an esthetic phenomenon". Praises like these do not cease when it comes to Maria Callas. With her ebony locks, her piercing dark eyes and svelte figure, she was indeed a charismatic soprano. A truly unique woman - you could know and feel you were in the presence of greatness.
